General Information

Situated on the eastern edge of Clark County, Washougal is close to the Portland International Airport which services major airlines for domestic and international travel. It is a short 20-minute trip to Portland. The area has a small local airport, which serves private pilots. Washougal has a mild climate with an average of 50 inches of rain each year with about five days each winter where snow or icy conditions exist. The city is a major gateway to the Columbia River Gorge and characterized by viewpoints, natural attractions, and services for visitors.

Population: 13,480 (2008).

Rank in size: 64th largest city in the state of Washington.

Area: 4.96 square miles.

  • City Council meets the first and third Monday of each month at 7 p.m., unless the Monday falls on a holiday, in which case the meeting is held the next day.

Notes of Special Interest

  • Established in 1880 — Washougal is platted from property of the Richard Ough Donation Land Claim by J.E. Durgan and Captain Love. In 1906 Camas was incorporated into a town.
  • In 1908 the city is incorporated as the City of Washougal (Rushing Waters).
